Semester project

In the fourth semester, the students of our Bachelor degree programs have to complete an 11-week semester project. They work like a contractor on a development task set by a company as a client at the university. The industrial partner is on site roughly once a week to answer questions or to have interim results presented by the students. In addition, a company contact person is available for questions and is easily accessible. In the end, the company gets the desired result, which can range from fully functional prototypes to extensive technology studies. Except for the time commitment for supervision and relevant workshops as well as a (desired) recognition prize for the students, the project semester is free of charge for companies.

Innovation projects

The Faculty of Computer Science is very committed to the university's interdisciplinary makerspace in inno.space and regularly runs projects for students from all faculties with international partners such as Stanford University. The topics of these projects are also proposed by companies, aimed at medium to long-term innovations, so the task is more general, i.e. the projects are not suitable for "contract developments" with specific system ideas.

The team, which is made up of students from HS Mannheim and a university abroad, works on design thinking for four to ten-month projects and at the end presents an innovative solution. Depending on the progress of the project, the exchange with the company can take place during the projects. The companies assumes the costs incurred, e.g. financing of the innovation area, and it is expected that the company pays travel expenses. In return students get an insight into innovation processes and highly innovative solutions.
